Today we’d like to introduce you to Daysi Rojas.
Hi Daysi, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My name is Daysi Rojas, I was born in Cuba in 1980, I always wanted to be a photographer but back in Cuba my chances to get my hands on a camera were actually impossible. By 2007 the wind blows really hard and I had the opportunity to come to Tampa, Florida. I am really thankful for that wind that brought me here.
My story is not different than other immigrants, I worked hard and picked up any job I was able to find, waitress, babysitter, front desk, etc.
I remember my family saying “you will never make money doing photography, put your feet on the ground”.
I was sad and disappointed and those words were too heavy back then so I gave up on my dreams to become a photographer. I took another path one that did make a lot of money. I bought a beautiful house & drove a nice car but I was not happy. I felt empty and made a lot of mistakes that I really regret.
This regrettable path led me to serve time
For failing to properly file my business income taxes. I was once told that Cubans get the opportunity to come to this country and yet we take it for granted by choosing the wrong path.
I did take my opportunity for granted. I regret doing so and I have great remorse for the mistakes I made. I vowed to never again make the same mistakes and take my second chance for granted.
I found the courage to finally follow my dreams and become a photographer.
I started researching how to build a photography business. I focused on improving my techniques.
Little by little and with my partner’s support, we opened Facebook 4D Studios (Now rebranded to Preggoland Mamas & simultaneously I created my own photography brand DAYSI ROJAS PORTRAITS.
Now, you can find me either behind the camera in my studio or in Preggoland Mamas with my partner offering 3D/4D ultrasounds to pregnant mommas.
My partner was an OB-GYN doctor in Cuba, we combined our passions and created a beautiful place where the moms to be can get pictures of their babies inside and out of the womb. We also created our own family with 2 little boys Marc (6) & Zack (3).
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
My journey has been difficult, hard, and very scary at times. I have been learning and failing as many do but I set my goals and together with my partner we have been able to support our dreams along the way. Life is not easy and yes we take the wrong path sometimes but do not give up because it is never too late to follow your dreams.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I love timeless portraits and maternity is one of my favorite subjects to photograph. I focus on the beauty of pregnancy. To me, the changes the body undergoes during pregnancy are beautiful, the perfection of the lines and curves are amazing. I also do portraits and commercial shoots. I mostly combine my portrait work with our 3D/4D ultrasound Studio offering the most beautiful experiences to expectant moms. My images will reflect the way I see the subject in front of my camera.
We’d love to hear about how you think about risk-taking?
Risk-taking is the only way to go if we are talking about our dreams, never say NO to your dreams. Life has taught me that when we really want something and we pursue it fiercely The right pieces will fall into place.
My favorite quote is from Paulo Coelho “When you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.”
