Daily Inspiration: Meet Ashlyn Baker

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashlyn Baker.

Hi Ashlyn, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My name is Ashlyn Baker, a 22-year-old business owner, makeup artist, college student, and fashion lover. It all started back in 2018, just a few months away from graduating HS and there was a program opportunity called “2020 catch lite” where they provided an 8-week course for young aspiring business owners to learn the fundamentals of owning and running a business. At the end of those 8 weeks, we were awarded $2,000 towards the development of our own businesses. At the time I didn’t know I wanted to do makeup. I would do it on myself for fun, but my mom suggested I give it a try doing it on others and that’s how it all started.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The process hasn’t completely been smooth sailing. For the first year was absolutely great, I was as booked and busy as much as a new MUA could be. Then mid-2019 I landed a job with MAC Cosmetics and worked for them for about 2 1/2 years.

It wasn’t until things got a bit more challenging and I had a bit more on my plate where things started to slow down. Don’t get me wrong, I was still booking appointments, but it was only a handful. After finishing up my AA degree at SPC I decided to continue my studies at FAU in Boca Raton, not knowing this would be one of the toughest seasons of my life. I had plans on moving out there, meeting and connecting with so many different individuals and really focusing on what I went there to do which was A) Finish school and B) Focus and business and making sure Slayed By Ashlyn, LLC flourishes. Neither one of those happen. I was mentally, emotionally, and physically stuck. My craft and business were not a priority. There was barley even a business. After a lot of contemplating, I made the decision to move back to St. Pete and picking back up where I left off, and really getting serious about my business. Being truthful, myself nor my business is where I would like it to be and it really is like that sometimes. You must realize you have to start somewhere and that’s where I’m at in my business journey right now. This is truly only the beginning and it’s only up from here.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am an individual with so much passion, charm, and energy and I know that sets me apart from others. With me being a girl of many passions (but of course Makeup is my #1) within the past few years I’ve also picked up the hobby of thrift shopping and styling, making videos on my Instagram and taking photos, dancing, roller skating, and much more. I would have to say getting cute, making content, and taking pictures to post on my Instagram would have to be runner up. My Instagram and my crafts that I involve within my feed is something I really take pride in. It something that I find so much joy in doing. I’m most proud of me just ultimately being myself in everything I do and just doing the things I love no matter what anyone says or thinks. I’m so proud of myself not giving up on what I love even when the world round us is telling us so many different things.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
I absolutely love St. Pete. Being somewhere else made me realize how much a gem of a city it truly is. I can’t pick between the food-the little cute delicious food spots, culture-all the history and museums, scenery- beaches parks, or community-so many creatives and artists.

It’s starting to get very crowded which is my least favorite.
