Conversations with Theresa Lorenti-Salerno

Today we’d like to introduce you to Theresa Lorenti-Salerno.

Hi Theresa, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My background is in fashion design. I was previously a sportwear designer before I wound up in the wonderful world of custom window treatments. I’ve always loved home design so delved in that for a while. During that time, I truly found where my heart is. I believe you just know when it’s your calling. I sure did at that. It allowed me the freedom to meet with clients on a daily basis from businesses to residential clients. I listen to the clients’ needs and create a beautiful solution keeping their spaces aesthetics in mind. As a trained fashion designer, I call Custom window treatments the Couture of window spaces, verses store-bought ready-made treatments. Once you have custom treatments in your home you really can’t go back to anything else. Just like a Prada Heel over nine west.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Well-being a business woman it’s never easy, but nothing great comes from easy. I originally started my window treatment business in Western New York and went back and forth between the two cities of Rochester NY and Buffalo NY. I had many clients in both and loved being on the road, so it didn’t bother me that I was all over the place. In fact, I thrive on challenges. I did all of this while raising my son and designing for another company. When my son was sprouting his wings from his mama bird and went off to college, I made the tough decision to move my business to Florida, along with my then-boyfriend and most recently, husband. I have always wanted to be in the warm weather and found my home and next chapter of my life in Tampa Florida. The clientele is quite different from the cold north to the warm and easy weather, so I adapted my business model to what I have learned and the changes that come along with it. All in all, I am a very flexible person and realize that change is growth, so I must say that it hasn’t been really a struggle but a new direction with so many possibilities.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
So, as I’ve said previously, I was a sportwear designer. As well as designing clothing, I’ve been a graphic designer and managed an art department. I had a handbag line, where I upcycled the purses from vintage leather coats and furs. I liked the idea of repurposing the vintage garments into an entirely new idea and by owning my own vintage clothing boutique I had the items ready for repurpose right there. I felt as though I was making a tiny footprint to help the environment too. Sometimes it’s more difficult to deconstruct to reconstruct than just starting from scratch, which makes it a challenge but I’m a problem solver by nature, so it worked. I have done a lot and will continue to do more because ask anyone that knows me, I always have my hands busy and my mind focused on something. But currently, I have been so focused on my business that window treatment design has my full attention. I am in the process of opening up another satellite workroom for specialty jobs and that will be ready by spring. So, to help people understand if unfamiliar, there are soft window treatments which are draperies, valances, and cornices. There are also hard window treatments like blinds, shades, and shutters. I sell all of them. But my two biggest sellers are draperies and shutters. My biggest love are draperies and how beautiful they can make a room with an amazing decorative rod and motorization. It just gets me really excited!

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I think luck isn’t so much luck but attitude. I believe in energy. The energy that you create to the energy you receive, it’s all one big spinning vortex. Staying in the now, cherishing the past, and being excited for the future is pretty much how I have harnessed my luck to be lucky!
