Conversations with Alena Artemenko

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alena Artemenko.

Hi Alena, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
When I was eleven, I came across a shoebox full of these beautiful film photos my father took back in Russia. These photos were stunning! Photos of him in the military, him and my mom hiking huge mountains, adventures, and stunning portraits of people I only thought of as my parents and nothing else until this moment.

It was a big “aha” moment, a life-changing perspective shift. These people weren’t just my parents, they have stories, dreams, fears, pain, love, and hopes. I started to see the magic in everyone around me. Now, I look at every individual person with such interest. Everyone is their own person, in their own world. It’s so interesting to me.

I saved up all the money from babysitting and finally bought my first DSLR at thirteen. I didn’t start photographing professionally until I was seventeen. I can say at age twenty-six, I have grown so much through photography.

My business evolved from strictly portraits (my forever love), to editorial work with businesses, lifestyle products, weddings, and maternity. I look at everything and everyone with such wonder, this is what I am meant to be doing.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Nothing in life is a smooth ride, the road always has some surprises. Helps us learn. I would say that the biggest struggle was figuring out the business side of this career choice. I had the creative part down, but it took me a few years, books, courses, YouTube videos, and mentors to get me established.

I had to grow my mindset and heal the imposter syndrome that came with starting a business. Luckily, I have an amazing partner that supports me and helps me grow.

He has owned and owns a few businesses, so I have learned a lot. Another struggle I faced was relocating a few times and reestablishing myself in a new area. The most recent time was last year when I and my little family moved from Colorado to Florida! We are so thrilled to be in Saint Pete FL!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a photographer.

My specialty is photographing people, whether it be weddings, portraits, maternity, or more commercial work with lifestyle product photography. I’m most proud of how I see people through this lens. I truly feel like I photograph such authenticity.

I’m also proud of how much work and time I put into each photo, focusing on the details and bringing them to life. I do my best to photograph the true essence of the person or thing. I would say that is what sets me apart from others.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
My biggest supporter Is my better half, Eric Loumeau.

He is my inspiration, motivation, and source of a lot of business knowledge. If it wasn’t for him, I honestly wouldn’t be going after my dreams and building this business that I’m so in love with.

My dear friend and mentor Sunnie Heers from

Sunnie is a brilliant businesswoman and stunningly talented elopement photographer. She has built her business from scratch. She has blessed me with so much insight, kindness, and friendship.
