Conversations with Deborah Bostock-Kelley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Deborah Bostock-Kelley.

Deborah, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My company, The WriteOne Creative Services, began in 2005 as a fun side gig in addition to my full-time marketing communications job. When the company I worked for went international, I was informed I would be taking over all design, newsletter, and intranet web design. Though I loved writing and did design as a hobby, my background was as a reporter. I was blessed to return to college, get my bachelor’s degree, learn everything I could about graphic design, and take classes in web design to apply to this role. In passing, I spoke to parents about my idea of starting a company because I could combine reporting, graphic design, and web design to provide a one-stop creative shop for entrepreneurs like myself. And then I did nothing more about it. For my birthday that year, my parents surprised me by purchasing my company name with Sunbiz and told me not to waste the opportunity. My first web client was actually my employer. My second was my daughter’s charter school. Nearly every client after that was referred by the client before. In 2008, I was laid off and decided to operate my company full-time, and I have never looked back. The WriteOne Creative Services is a 5-star company, recipient of multiple awards and recognitions in its nearly 16 years in business.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road has not always been smooth. The scary part of being a solopreneur is there is no guarantee of a paycheck week to week. Each day, you have to network and secure new clients. Some of the struggles happened when I began having undiagnosed autoimmune issues in my company’s early years. Running a one-woman business and dealing with extreme fatigue and pain don’t mix well. Thankfully, the issues are finally controlled, and because of my stellar reputation in the industry, new opportunities have consistently been around the corner, even during this unprecedented pandemic.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in complete branding solutions. Because my PR background is as a current business and entertainment reporter for several magazines and online publications, I can easily write press releases, business bios, web copy, and articles to help launch a new business or product, and combine with comprehensive graphic design and web design skills. I am known for my integrity, affordable pricing, and quick turnaround. I am extremely proud of my 5-star rating and being awarded “Best Established Business,” recommended by my customers. However, what has meant the most to me has been being recognized for being a pay-it-forward organization. In 2013, as my company’s philanthropic side, I founded Life Amplified, a talent showcase whose ticket sales benefit a local grassroots nonprofit. Seven years later, Life Amplified has raised funds for 15 different organizations whose platforms range from military PTSD, bullying, sexual violence, children’s cancer to LGBTQ+ services. Life Amplified has been recognized as both Bay News 9 Everyday Hero and Fox 13 Hometown Hero. What sets me apart from others is when I say I give 150%, I can pretty much guarantee that I’m not working 9-5 on the project. I work whatever hours it takes to get the job done. When someone calls my company, he only deal with me. He is never outsourced to someone else. I stand my work, and my goal is to exceed my client’s expectations.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
My advice to anyone just starting out is to do what you are passionate about. Do it. Don’t listen to the naysayers. I wish someone had told me that I could do what I love as a job. I wish I wouldn’t have waited so long to start a career that brings me so much joy and gives me the opportunity to help others.
