Community Highlights: Meet Joshua Schmitt of Banyan Coffee Company

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joshua Schmitt.

Hi Joshua, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
We began our journey with a popcorn popper in our Garage about nine years ago. We were seeking quality and fresh coffee that seem to be lacking in Bradenton. We started sharing with family & friends, not knowing that our path at first wasn’t to start a business or have a coffee shop in Bradenton but we felt like there was a need for specialty coffee in not only Bradenton but Sarasota as well. This area can be commercially driven by your Starbucks and Dunkin Donuts but our goal was to give this area a different perspective. Some coffee shop can be intimating or have that cold feeling when you walk in. We want to breakdown those factors and make coffee very approachable. That’s why we have a coffee truck! We want our coffee to be more inviting by coming off as fun but still hold that quality of coffee by serve specialty coffee. We use the business model of a 1980’s mullet hairdo. “Business in the front, party in the back.”

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
We must say during these difficult times going on, we seem to be doing very well for these times. Overall it’s been pretty smooth. If we have a challenge or obstacle, its probably teaching people in our local area about better coffee that is ethically source and its roasted locally. You would be surprised on how many coffee shops in Bradenton or Sarasota that don’t use local coffee. Though some use ethically sourced and quality beans, they forget that if you invest in your coffee from out of this area, your money leaves this area. We can be guilty of this too. But if coffee roasters and coffee shops can work together, we can benefit on both sides and our community benefits by keeping invested money in the area.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Our primary business is roasting specialty coffee in Bradenton, Florida. You can take advantage of our free local delivery and anything over $25 is free shipping throughout the US. We roast for individual households and wholesale coffee users. We have a coffee truck we use for the Bradenton Farmer’s Market as well as private events. The coffee truck definitely catches a lot of attention and is a fun way of bringing our product to new and existing customers. We offer our home delivery services so that our customer can have the utmost convince and freshness of their coffee.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
We get asked that a lot by coffee roasters and folks wanting to start a coffee business. It’s easy to explain to them. Just work super hard! It’s rolling your sleeves up and doing it everyday regardless of the outcome. We both grew up in homes where entrepreneurship was in our daily lives, so it comes natural to us. Our advice is don’t give up and keep approaching folks because doors will eventually open.
