Community Highlights: Meet Josh and Jessica White of Tampa Bay Salvage

Today we’d like to introduce you to Josh and Jessica White. Them and their team share their story with us below:

Josh White, owner, and founder of Tampa Bay Salvage was born in Philadelphia PA, and grew up in South Jersey. The son of a “picker” and contractor he learned the ropes of architectural salvage through his family business, Recycling The Past in Barnegat, NJ.

Josh always had a love for antiques and woodworking and soon blossomed into a formidable carpenter and welder. He brings well over 20 years of experience in the field and has salvaged many notable homes, estates, churches, schools, and public buildings.

Josh received his Certification in JUNK and went to the School of Hard Knocks. His work led him to a brief television career as a “D-List” celebrity on DIY Networks’ “Operation Salvage” and “Dirty Jobs” along with Mike Rowe.

After a brief stint in Florida after graduation from West Virginia University, he met the love of his life and partner in crime… soon to be his wife. Her vision and marketing expertise brought a lot to the table as a savvy business partner.

Her love of travel inspired him to travel the world to bring back unique finds from all over the world. Jessica is involved with many charities here at home and across the globe.

After two young boys and the coldest winter on record, together the White family decided to relocate to Florida full time to set off on their own venture. Ten years later and still going strong! They pride themselves on the “Funky Finds” from Europe, Asia, Latin America, and right here at home. Josh and Jessica make it their mission to find the most unique items to offer in the store.

We have been called “Professional World Pickers” and take pride in offering a different customer experience with a cool laid back vibe. From the artistic to eclectic and everything in between in the beautiful town of Tarpon springs. Our work across the globe has now led us to venture into a new company in India opening this year “Blue City International Trading”.

We offer a full woodworking and welding shop and our direct importers of exotic wood live edge slabs from Central America. We take pride in hand-selecting each piece of wood for our customers and are a one-stop shop for all things custom-made, serving both commercial and residential clients nationwide.

We have a resume that includes, hotels, restaurants, celebrities, and more. Because we are custom there usually isn’t a “typical” project that we create. We build tables, chairs, stools, benches, countertops, barn doors, barn siding/wall cladding, custom cabinetry, shelving, iron fencing, bars, cash wraps, and desks… just to name a few.

We can use any of our wide selection of architectural antiques and a vast array of reclaimed lumber and building materials for any build/install project and there’s not much that can stump our team. Josh’s passion for creating unique pieces has transcended our brand to go beyond just antiques and people travel from across the nation for his artistry.

Our mission: Architectural antiques and rare finds. Specializing in the sale of historic house parts, nautical antiques, industrial antiques, and rare finds from around the world. Retail and wholesale to the trade. Full woodworking and welding shop for all your custom needs, commercial and residential.

Always buying from one piece to entire buildings.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
We have been truly blessed with our company and it has had its ups and downs along the way!

As entrepreneurs running a small business, there are a lot of sacrifices that you make in your life that many people may not understand. Balancing having a family and your business has many challenges that take sacrifices and compromise to make work.

We have both taken many risks to make this business grow and some have worked while others have failed. There is no better way to learn about your own business than through failing at times. It’s the key factor to thriving and keeps you grounded as a business owner. Our company grew very fast and keeping up with the demand was hard in the beginning and still has it challenges.

Social Media made a big presence which changed business forever. Marketing, keeping up with trends, and the demands of keeping the word out have kept us on our toes. It’s like being glued to your phone 24 hours a day. A lot different than the ’90s!

Covid hit hard, and we adjusted deciding to move our shop back to Tarpon Springs where we will be permanently, and had major impacts on importing which we are currently rebounding from. We both could not and would not be here without our customers and we are grateful to be in business.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
