Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamie Van Cuyk.
Hi Jamie, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
In 2016, I left my successful corporate career to fulfill my dream of starting a software development business with my husband. Six months later, however, I realized that I had zero passion for the business we were starting and I needed to transition to something else.
During that time, I was doing some leadership consulting work with the company I left and LOVED it. I decided that I would give consulting a try but I needed to figure out how I wanted to help companies.
At that time, I had a membership to the St Petersburg Chamber and decided to go to events where I could network and uncover where businesses were struggling. Even though I assumed I would do corporate consulting, during every event, I found myself speaking with small business owners. The issues that kept coming up were around hiring and team management – many often saying that it took them YEARS to finally find quality team members or that they were still struggling and asking for help.
Being that I thought I was going to do corporate consulting, I tried to find them help. At that time, finding a consultant who would help very small businesses with their hiring challenges was impossible. Every company I found only wanted to help larger small businesses. I saw this as a major issue because you need a solid team to grow from a business of less than five to a business of 50+ team members.
That is when I realized that a major gap existed. Businesses needed support hiring their very first team members so they didn’t have to depend on luck or go through a series of bad hires. I also realized that I had the skills to help them.
From there, Growing Your Team was formed. Today, we help small businesses – ranging from the solopreneur who’s looking to hiring their first employee to businesses averaging 15 employees – learn how to hire their early team members and avoid the hiring and firing cycle.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Being my first business, there was so much to learn. I would say that my biggest struggles were learning how to market and sell my services. Looking back, I had an “if I build it, they will come” mindset at first. I was also too close to the solutions I offered that I didn’t know how to translate them to the problems my clients thought they had.
Luckily, I invested in help. I worked with multiple consultants who helped me learn how to package my services so they connected with my audience and were easy to sell.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Growing Your Team guides small business owners through the process of learning how to hiring their early team members. Our clients tend to range from solopreneurs looking to hire their first long-term team members to businesses that average 15 employees.
At Growing Your Team, we are not about putting butts in seats. Instead, our goal is to help every business hire their perfect-fit team member – one that is successful in the role and fits the company culture.
We offer three different levels of services.
1) Hiring process education for the business owners who are brand new to hiring or realizing their old ways is not ideal.
2) Hiring strategy creation for those who know how to succeed with hiring but need help writing candidate attracting job postings and interview guides that uncover the right information about a candidate.
3) Recruiting services for the business owner who knows how to hire successfully but no longer has the time to do it all themselves.
Often, business owners come to us knowing that they need to hire a team member but don’t know where to start. They are afraid of hiring the wrong person and throwing away their money, and some have made major hiring mistakes in the past. After working with us, they are confident that they are making the right hiring choice and end up with team members that make such an impact they can’t picture their business without them on the team.

One of my favorite resources is Nikki Rausch. She runs an amazing membership that I have been a part of for two years. She also hosts the Sale Maven Podcast which is full of tips on how to be successful in growing your business without having to be sleazy with your sales methods.
My other favorite resource is Babe Crafted. It’s a global online membership that was founded in the Tampa Bay area. The group is so supportive and has made a huge impact on my business.
