Community Highlights: Meet Deb Fusek of EverParent Coaching

Today we’d like to introduce you to Deb Fusek.

Hi Deb, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I’ve been a mom since 1995 and now have 3 children. Two have flown the nest and our youngest is in high school. I have faced many parenting struggles such as school issues, sibling rivalry, anger, friend drama, power struggles, and arguments with my dear husband about how to parent. Our family has experienced ADHD, transracial adoption, developmental delays, giftedness, feeding issues, sensory processing disorder, middle child syndrome, trauma, and teen issues.

Adopting our son in 2005 opened my eyes to the needs of children coming from hard places. It led me to pursue a B.S. in Human Services in 2013. My career in child welfare began as a foster and adoptive family advocate in Springfield, Missouri. I served as an Adoption Case Manager in Missouri and Florida for five years. Working in child welfare gave me the desire to work more deeply with families. This led me to pursue a Master’s in Leadership and to become a Certified Parent Coach and Adoption Consultant.

My personal mission is to help parents to become the parent their child needs. I provide coaching on how to build a family culture of connection, active listening, and to create and maintain age-appropriate boundaries. I also help parents navigate adoption by educating them on the various forms of adoption and helping “soon to be” parents discover which adoption path is the best fit for a child coming into their home. I also support adoptive parents as they face parenting challenges. I am a parent coach with a specialty in adoption.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Becoming a parent coach has not been an easy journey. I was a stay-at-home mom for 17 years before I went back to school and graduated with my undergraduate degree in human services at age 40. I went on to work in child welfare from there and completed my graduate degree in leadership this year along with my parent coaching certification. I have been in the trenches with three children, and I know there are no easy answers. Parenting is a long road and is known as the hardest and most important job on earth. Yet, parent coaching is not a household term. My biggest challenge as a parent coach is to educate parents on what parent coaching is and to inspire them to take action to grow as a parent.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
EverParent Coaching is here to help parents become the parent their children need. It’s not about “straightening kids out”, judgment, or ridged parenting rules. Rather, taking down barriers to connection, improving communication, and setting clear boundaries is the focus. As a parent coach and adoption consultant, I specialize in parenting kids with traumatic backgrounds, adoption, challenging children, sensory processing disorder, and ADHD. What sets me apart as a parent coach is that I have been in the trenches as a mom for 26 years. I have tried ridged discipline strategies such as spanking, banishing, and the silent treatment. I have seen the difference that connection-based parenting has made in my own family. The amazing part is that research across multiple fields such as social science, psychology, child development, and neuroscience show that connection, listening, and clear boundaries are foundational to heathy child development.

EverParent Coaching offers parent coaching in a 4-session package to support parents in learning and integrating science-based parenting methods. We will discuss how meet each child’s needs by considering new perspectives. Coaching is without judgment, rooted in self-compassion, and designed to support the whole family.

EverParent Adoption Consulting offers a 90-minute pre-adoption consulting session for those considering adoption. We will discuss the various forms of adoption and the process. This is a time for future parents to ask their deepest burning questions about adoption and to consider which form of adoption is the best fit for a child coming into the home. The emphasis is on meeting the child’s needs. Future parents are welcome to have sessions as needed during the adoption process. Adoptive parents are invited to participate in parent coaching to learn trauma-informed parenting tools.
