Today we’d like to introduce you to Alyssa Gay.
Hi Alyssa, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in a family of entrepreneurs and gained a first-hand look at the many hats business owners wear, so I’ve always had a deep understanding of what it takes to run a business. That also means that I swore for years I would never own a business. The idea of “security” in a 9-5, a 401k, PTO, and more seemed like the best option for me.
I got married young and then decided to go back to college. I attended SCF for my A.A. and transferred to the University of Florida for my Bachelor’s. I worked full-time throughout my educational career and worked primarily in small businesses and even a start-up hub. I quickly watched “one more thing” get added to the never-ending task list of business owners. I jumped in and started learning about marketing, communications, graphic design, business strategy, and more (we’re talking before Facebook business pages existed). That’s when I decided my degree path in communications and when my heart for small business grew even more.
After graduating UF, I interviewed at many marketing agencies. I found that most don’t serve small businesses, they aren’t innovative or willing to risk trying new marketing techniques, and even interviewed at some that have since been the subject of ethical violations (thank goodness I followed my gut!). I had handled the marketing, particularly social media and digital marketing, for most businesses that I had worked in and even did some freelance work while in school and working my regular job. One day, I decided, “If I can do this for them, I can do it full-time.” I was at my job, typed up a business plan in about 15 minutes, sent it to my husband, and he texted saying, “Let’s go.”
I spent the next few months working on all of the business foundation – setting up an LLC, finding professional liability insurance, market research, and more. I officially launched Alyssa Gay Consulting on January 1, 2018, while still working full time elsewhere. I anticipated that it would take about two years to take AGC full time… it only took four months.
From then on, we’ve had continual growth, with some of the biggest growth happening in 2020. I realize that I am beyond blessed to be able to say that as so many business owners had a much different experience last year. In such a short amount of time since launching it’s easy to look back and see an “overnight success,” but believe me, there have been many late nights, weekends worked through, family/friend functions missed, blood, sweat, and tears to get AGC where it is today.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has definitely not been a smooth road – I don’t think anyone’s path in entrepreneurship is. Frankly, if they say it’s been overwhelmingly easy they’ve likely not been in business long, are lying to themselves, or have tons of money to make problems disappear.
Some of the struggles I’ve faced have included learning how to deal with difficult clients (even firing them), trying and failing when it comes to the hiring process, growth struggles, and generally standing up for my business when it comes to our work and worth. (Oh, and let’s not forget about the mental battles too – struggling with perfectionism, imposter syndrome, etc!) Those are a high level overview, but there are a million little struggles and decisions made every day. Looking at the big picture, I don’t think back on the struggles & hard times – I immediately think of all of the good times!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?

What was your favorite childhood memory?
This is a tough one, but likely anything that had to do with traveling. I have fond memories of exploring Nashville, Maine, Washington, D.C., and more. That’s probably what lead to my passion and love for traveling today!
