Check Out Timala Stewart’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Timala Stewart.

Hi Timala, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I graduated from VCU with a BA in Fashion Merchandising and shortly after landed a role as Assistant Buyer for a VA-based furniture company where I learned the ins and outs of the furniture industry. Everything from sales to product development, furniture design styles, logistics, assortment building, operations, you name it. In 2015, I moved to Tampa and worked as Home Accessories Buyer for a well-known furniture brand where I further honed in on those skills. Being surrounded by furniture & home decor for pretty much all of my career, I naturally had an affinity for interior decorating and business acumen. I started to be intentional about decorating my home and friends noticed and would ask me to help them. With some of my friends being in different states, I wanted to figure out the best way to help them from afar. Little did I know, online interior design, aka E-Design, was a thing and was becoming more popular due to easily accessible rendering technology and, of course, social media. I decided E-Design would be my route into Interior Design so I made my business official in December 2019 and started taking clients in April 2020. I left my corporate gig in September 2020 to pursue Decurated Interiors full-time.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Smooth? Absolutely not, lol. Starting a business during a pandemic and racial uprising was (and is) a challenge to say the least. Seeing friends and family fall ill to Covid, witnessing local businesses shutter, watching protests all over the country, the world really, while trying to find my footing in this new industry felt like sensory overload. I knew I had plenty to learn and strategize, but I also had to prioritize my wellness. The biggest struggle was not overexerting myself under the guise of productivity during an unprecedented time of mental and emotional fatigue. The other challenges are ones that I’d assume all new business owners face: lots of legal filings, forms and figuring out taxes.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Decurated Interiors is an online interior design studio based in Tampa, FL that services clients all over. Specializing in E-Design, I digitally curate homes into spaces that my clients love with their style, desires, functional needs and budget in mind. I founded Decurated Interiors to make a typically luxury service more accessible and to also amplify Black-owned furniture, decor, + art businesses.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Completely unrelated to my business, but I got stuck on a zip line once in Tulum, Mexico. One of the attendants had to monkey crawl down the line and attach me to their harness to get me to the next post.
