Today we’d like to introduce you to Daphne Verzosa.
Hi Daphne, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I and Chad (my partner) started Lathala Creative Studios in 2019 as a side hustle, shooting here and there for small businesses and solo entrepreneurs, thanks to a friend of Chad’s who suggested we try doing product photography. Back then we didn’t realize it was a thing, that it was something we can make a career out of. So, we bought a small tabletop photography equipment and lights and used our small living room as a makeshift studio just to try it out.
Fast forward to 2021, we are now in a 1000 sq. ft. professional studio in Clearwater, FL, and have done work for brands, including Walmart, Stash Tea, Love Pop, and homegrown brands like Cirkul and Dixie Belle Paint Co.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Perhaps one of our biggest challenges in commercial photography is helping clients understand the value of what we do. It’s disheartening when people expect to get images for cheap, so we take it upon ourselves to educate clients why we charge what we charge. It’s a lot of work and sometimes you lose potential clients in the process but we feel better knowing that (hopefully) potential clients will not have the same mindset when they reach out to another photographer.
And then you add a pandemic in the mix, the past year has not been easy for us. Before the world shut down, we just moved out of our living room and acquired a bigger space, about to celebrate our first year. Many of our projects were put on hold and like many small businesses we were worried about closing shop. But we held out, and thankfully we’re still here.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?

We specialize in creating fun, colorful product photography and stop motion videos with a touch of whimsy. Many of our creative ideas stem from our dreams where inanimate objects come alive with their own personalities.
One of the best examples of this is the series of photos we did for Stash Tea’s Astrolo-Tea campaign. For the campaign, we were asked to create an image for each zodiac sign using 12 different tea flavors. The client gave us a lot of creative freedom, and as photographers, that’s the best thing ever.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
Progress, not perfection. By consistently and patiently working on your craft, you will be able to fine-tune your style. It took us a bit of time, too, and wouldn’t have it any other way! I wish though someone educated us on copyright and licensing. Had we known at the very beginning, we wouldn’t have signed the rights to our photos away. But as with many things in life, you learn from experience. Now we know better 🙂 So if you’re a photographer who’s just starting out… always remember that by law, you are the copyright owner of the photographs you shoot, unless of course, you sign those rights over to someone else. So always read the fine print in your contracts, and charge licensing fees when brands use your photographs.
