Today we’d like to introduce you to Ben Marcum.
Hi Ben, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
I started out learning to tattoo in Kent, Ohio when I was 18 years old. I grew my career in Akron Ohio over the next 6 years learning everything I could about every style of tattooing. After a few years of running my own shop in Ohio (Marcum Up Tattoos) I decided along with my family it was time for a change we needed year-round summer so we settle on Florida. First few months were rough living in a tent finding work really just figuring Florida out. Once I got into the Florida tattoo scene everyone was welcoming with open arms but it wasn’t ’till I started working at Under the Surface Tattoos I found a real tattoo home in Florida. The shop ran by Shawn White and his wife Ashley has made me feel like family since day one. Now we continue to grow and push ourselves and our craft so we can provide the best experience possible.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
I believe anything that you are passionate about is not going to have a smooth road. You are not instantly great at something you have to put in time effort you have to sacrifice a lot of yourself to be great. It has been rough a lot of ups and downs with some of the most amazing and talented people I’ve ever meet. But the tough times make you humble and make you really cherish the good times you have and when you look back on your journey you can be proud of all the things you’ve accomplished.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a Tattoo Artist I’ve been tattooing for 15 years I specialize in Neo-Traditional tattooing but don’t limit myself to just one style. I’m known for always giving my clients great experiences in the shop with the art I make on them and the fun times we have from singing along to silly songs watching crazy videos or even have deep life talks and helping in any way I can.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up I was a very funny outgoing kid, I loved to draw with my dad and brothers and as I grew so did my obsession with art. I would spend days on drawings for people in school all while cracking jokes and making people laugh always just wanting to have a good time with good people.
