Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole Lytwyn
Hi Nicole, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Since as long as I can remember, I was a computer nerd. Even in middle school. my parents couldn’t pry me away from sitting at the computer for hours on end updating my Myspace profile theme, contemplating what design would speak to my personality the most. There was always something about the Internet that intrigued me. With the Internet, you can be whoever or whatever you want to be in this world and that was always such a beautiful thing to me. So there’s no surprise that after graduating with the Master’s degree in Digital Journalism and Design that I was going to make a little home for myself on the Internet, but at that time I didn’t know what it was going to look like yet. With my WordPress skills that I had learned throughout college, after I graduated, I jumped right in and started a fashion and lifestyle blog. (At that time, it was popular but not as competitive like it is today.) I may not have known how I was going to make my way in this world with my skillset, but I did know that I loved fashion and could write enough on the topic to keep myself busy. To my surprise, I ended up gaining a following of 5,000 readers in less than a year. I learned a lot about social media algorithms and my success fashion blogging helped me land my first marketing job out of college where I was in charge of the company’s social media and web presence. It was in that role that I found my love and mad skills for website design and search engine optimization. Fast forward a couple years- I started building business websites for my friends and family as a “side hustle” and later started receiving REAL website referrals from friends. I ended up diversifying my marketing skills through a couple full-time positions over the next 3 years while still hustling building websites on the side. Eventually I got to a point in my life where I had saved up enough money, built up my contacts, and was generating a decent amount of business where I felt comfortable taking that big leap of faith, quitting my full-time marketing job and helping business owners with web design FULL TIME. That was about 2 years ago now. Today, I am no longer a one woman show. I am still the chief designer but now have a small team of creatives, developers, and marketing professionals that help make our client’s branding and web presence everything they ever dreamed it could be.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Starting a business is NEVER a smooth road. If someone tells you it is then they are lying to you or leaving out all of the help that they received along the way. I’ve had a lot of detours and setbacks getting to where I am today and I know that there are more on the road ahead. I’ve come to think of obstacles and challenges as opportunities to learn and make me a stronger business woman and leader.
